WSET Level 1 Courses

The WSET Level 1 was created to introduce basic skills and product knowledge for anyone wishing to join the hospitality or retail wine trade. It is also ideal for wine enthusiasts who wish to learn more and gain confidence. if you know what you like but want to be able to put it into words then this is the course for you. No previous training is required and the course combines a fun way to learn with a structured framework.

Course content:

Wine Tasting

Using the WSET® Systematic Approach to Tasting you will soon be able to slurp, taste and describe wines like a pro.

Food & Wine Matching

Understand the principles of balancing flavours to get the most out of matching food and wine.

Wine Service and Storage

Avoid all the common mistakes people make when storing or serving wine; and learn how to identify faults with confidence.

Social Responsibility

Drink less but better – a guide to responsible drinking.

Types and Styles of Wine

Understanding why wines are different and how to experiment will unlock the gates to the whole world of wine.

Grape Varieties

A look at the main international varieties and the kinds of wine they can produce

Main white grape varieties: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling.

Main black grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah/Shiraz.

Named Wines

White: Pinot Grigio, Muscadet, Sancerre, Chablis, Sauternes.
Red: Claret (aka Bordeaux), Beaujolais, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Rioja, Chianti.


Number of Wines Tasted: You will taste 12 different wines

Duration of course: 1 full day including the exam

Examination: There will be a 45 minute multiple choice exam of 30 questions and you need 70% to pass.

Certification: WHEN you pass, you will get a certificate which you can proudly frame and display as well as a lapel pin to wear with pride.
